Most footballers get one reinvention if they're lucky. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has managed several. The goalscoring midfielder who tore through Ukraine became a Bundesliga creator, stumbled in England, rebuilt himself in Rome and then, in his thirties, turned into the calm deep-lying passer Inter trust in big games. On 1 July 2026 the club gave him another one-year contract, running to 30 June 2027. At 37, that isn't sentiment. It's a judgement that he still makes the team better.
So what is he worth, what does he earn, and how did a kid from Yerevan end up as one of the most adaptable players of his era?

Yerevan, France and a Name Carried Forward
Football was the family business. His father, Hamlet Mkhitaryan, was a professional striker, and part of Henrikh's early childhood was spent in France while his dad played there. Hamlet died of illness when his son was still young, a loss that has shaped the way Mkhitaryan talks about the game and about family ever since.
His mother, Marina Tashchyan, worked in football administration, and his sister, Monica, has also worked around football organisations. Back in Armenia, Henrikh came through at Pyunik, the club where his European story really began.
Five Leagues, One Constant
The route reads like a map of European football. Pyunik led to Metalurh Donetsk, then Shakhtar Donetsk, where his 2012/13 season was ridiculous for a midfielder: goals arriving week after week from deep. That earned him the move to Borussia Dortmund, and in a fast, demanding attacking system he grew into one of the Bundesliga's sharpest creative players.
Manchester United signed him in 2016. On paper it worked: he won the League Cup and the Europa League, scoring in the final. In reality his time in England never quite settled, and in January 2018 he went to Arsenal in the swap that sent Alexis Sánchez to Old Trafford. Arsenal didn't fix it either.
Rome Gave Him Back
A loan to Roma in 2019 is the hinge of his career. Italy suited him. He scored more, smiled more and showed a tactical range that the Premier League rarely asked of him. The move became permanent, and in 2022 he lifted the Europa Conference League. That summer he walked out of Roma and into Inter on a free transfer, which in hindsight looks like one of the smartest pieces of business Inter have done in years.
The Deeper Role at Inter
In Milan he dropped deeper. Fewer goals, more control. He became the player who keeps possession ticking when a game gets nervous, and Inter won a Serie A title and reached two Champions League finals with him in the midfield rotation. He also became the first Armenian to play for the club, something he has never treated lightly.

What He Earns, and What He Actually Keeps
Icon Polls estimates Mkhitaryan's net worth at $6 million to $8 million. That's an editorial estimate built from his contracts, likely bonuses, image rights and commercial income. No official figure exists, and his finances have never been made public.
His fixed gross salary at Inter for 2026/27 is estimated at about €2.56 million a year, roughly €49,000 a week before tax. With estimated performance bonuses, the total package could approach €2.94 million.
That looks modest next to his peak years at Dortmund, United and Arsenal, and some readers will wonder why the net worth isn't higher. The honest answer: gross career earnings are not what a player keeps. Tax, agents, management fees, living costs across five countries and investments all eat into the headline numbers. His market value, estimated at about €3 million in May 2026, is a poor guide to his importance too. Inter aren't paying for resale value. They're paying for a player who understands complex instructions the first time.
Betty, Hamlet and a Wedding in Venice
Mkhitaryan married Betty Vardanyan, daughter of Armenian businessman Mikayel Vardanyan, on 17 June 2019. The venue said a lot: the Armenian monastery on San Lazzaro degli Armeni, the island in the Venice lagoon that has been a centre of Armenian culture for centuries.
Betty keeps a low profile and doesn't chase attention through her husband's career. Their son, Hamlet, was born on 4 March 2020, named after the grandfather he never met. It's hard to think of a clearer sign of what matters to Mkhitaryan.
Faith and Flag
He is a Christian linked to the Armenian Apostolic Church. He has spoken with pride about Armenia being the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, and has sought out Armenian Apostolic churches while living abroad. Still, he doesn't make faith a talking point, and it would be wrong to overstate how he practises it privately.
Armenian identity is the louder thread. Born in Yerevan while Armenia was part of the Soviet Union, he played for the national team from 2007 to 2021, captained it for several years and finished with 95 caps and 32 goals. He retired from international football in March 2022 to focus on club football. By any measure he is one of the most important players the country has produced, and he has often described himself as an ambassador for it. Fans arguing over where he sits among the game's best can make their case in our vote for the best football players of all time.
One More Year, Then What?
The July extension changed the retirement conversation. Mkhitaryan has previously suggested Inter would be his last club and that he had no interest in a late move somewhere purely for money. This deal lets him stay at the level he still finds meaningful, into his 38th year.
Our read: the contract is a fair reflection of where he is. He won't play every minute, and he shouldn't. But in a squad that needs someone to steady matches, a player who has adapted to five leagues and several positions is worth more than his price tag suggests. Whether 2027 is the end depends on his body and his own call. He hasn't named a date, and nobody should pretend otherwise.
