Few wingers in Europe have collected league titles in as many countries as David Neres. The Netherlands, Portugal, Italy: he has won the lot. Then January 2026 happened. A left ankle that buckled against Lazio turned into surgery in London and roughly six months on the sidelines. The question at Napoli has shifted. Nobody doubts what Neres can do. They want to know whether the ankle will let him do it again.

Built in São Paulo, made in Amsterdam
Neres came through the academy at São Paulo FC and made his senior debut in 2016. It didn't take long. Ajax paid around €17.4 million to bring him to Europe in January 2017, a serious fee for a teenager with barely a season of top-flight football behind him.
Amsterdam is where he became a name. He won domestic titles there, but the 2018/19 Champions League run is what people remember: a young, fearless Ajax side that reached the semi-finals, with Neres as one of its most dangerous outlets. For a while he was talked about as one of the most exciting Brazilian attackers on the continent.
The Ukraine detour
In January 2022 Shakhtar Donetsk signed him for roughly €12 million. Weeks later, Russia invaded Ukraine. Neres was among the Brazilian players who worked to get out of the country safely, and he never made a competitive appearance for the club. It is one of the stranger entries on any modern footballer's CV, and a reminder that careers can bend for reasons that have nothing to do with football.
Lisbon, then Naples
Benfica paid about €15.3 million for him in 2022. Two seasons in Portugal brought a league title and a steady role in attack. In August 2024 Napoli moved for him, paying Benfica €28 million with add-ons that could push the fee higher.
His first season in Italy went about as well as anyone could have hoped. Napoli won Serie A in 2024/25, and Neres had a third major league title to his name.
Lazio, January, and a slow road back
The second season is the one that hurt. Against Lazio in January 2026, Neres injured his left ankle. Initial tests pointed to a sprain and rehab began straight away, but the problem proved more stubborn than hoped. Later that month he had surgery in London, which Napoli described as successful.
He missed the rest of the campaign. Even after medical clearance, the club chose not to rush him, which was the sensible call for a player whose game depends on sharp changes of direction. By July 2026 he was back in training after roughly six months away. That return was one of the more encouraging stories of Napoli's preseason, though a training ground comeback and a full season of football are two very different things.

What his market value is really saying
His estimated market value sat at about €23 million in May 2026, a little under the €28 million Napoli paid two years earlier. That is a modest dip, not a collapse. Valuations punish absence, and Neres spent half a season in a medical room. Age plays a part too. At 29, he is no longer being priced on potential.
Read the other way, holding most of his value through a long injury says the market still trusts the player.
The contract gives Napoli the upper hand
With a deal running to 30 June 2028 and an option for a further year, Napoli are under no pressure to sell. Speculation did return during his absence: Benfica were mentioned as a possible destination, and Turkish interest was reported. As of August 2026, no move had been completed.
That leaves Napoli in a comfortable spot. If Neres comes back sharp, they have a proven title winner on the wing. If a strong offer arrives, the years left on the deal let them set the price.
Money, estimated
Icon Polls estimates David Neres's net worth in 2026 at between $23 million and $27 million. That figure is an editorial estimate drawn from his contracts, career earnings, bonuses and commercial income. His personal finances have never been published.
His estimated gross fixed salary for 2026/27 is about €5.56 million a year, roughly €106,900 a week before tax and bonuses. Across the two guaranteed seasons after 2025/26, that comes to an estimated €11.12 million in fixed pay. Performance bonuses could add to it. As with most footballers, these are reported estimates rather than official numbers.
Small, left-footed and hard to catch
At 1.76 metres, Neres has never relied on size. His game is balance, a quick first touch and the ability to change direction without needing space to build up speed. Give him a defender one-on-one and he usually fancies it.
He is left-footed and comfortable on both flanks. From the right he likes to cut inside to shoot or combine with midfielders. From the left he can go outside and cross. He can also drift into attacking midfield. His best seasons have been the ones where the dribbling produced goals and assists, not just highlights, and that is the version Napoli will be hoping to see again.
Kira, Hope and a marriage in Brazil
Neres is married to German model Kira Winona. Their relationship became public during his Ajax years, when he joked in an interview that he had first contacted her through Instagram. She has moved with him through the Netherlands, the brief and frightening spell connected to Ukraine, Portugal and Italy, while building her own profile as a model and fitness personality.
He proposed in October 2024, and the couple married in Brazil in June 2025, not long after Napoli's title. They have a daughter, Hope Winona Neres, born in July 2020. Neres shares family moments selectively rather than constantly.
